The 7th and Final Bonen Kaigi

Daiya Hashimoto and 100shiki’s Gen Taguchi’s annual year end event Bounen Kaigi (Year-forgetting party+meeting) was held at Yahoo! Japan’s headoffice, Roppongi Midtown, Tokyo.

This 7th anniversary, however, had been declared the last one.

2009 Ranking

As always, the two hosts made their (personal) year ranking what impressed them in 2009.

Yahoo! Japan’s search keywords session

The event sponsor Yahoo! Japan, as always, showed some interesting stats around their massive search queries. Some interesting topics for our readers,

  • YouTube’s growth is much bigger than NicoNico Douga’s
  • Mixi got a lot more search after Mixi Appli platform release
  • New communication sites grows including Pixiv, Facebook, Ameba Pigg and Nicotto Town

Special guests session

Best selling business books author Kazuyo Katsuma, and her friend, 90’s songwriter Kohmi Hirose, both are the most popular celebrities on Japanese Twitter, appeared and got open interview by Hashimoto and Taguchi.

Taguchi, who introduced Twitter earliest to Japanese tech-savvy people when there was SXSW 2006, asked Katsuma how much Twitter is promising in Japanese web. Her answer was it would fail in a year unless Twitter Japan gets 10 times bigger mas. She said TJ has to lower hurdles for newcomers by, for example,

1. to attract people interested in entertainment (concert, etc)
2. to bridge politicians and people gap

The hashtag of the event is “#bk2009″.

Event Wrap-up: 400+ Geeks Applaud Web Innovators At WISH2009

WISH2009 Venue

More than 400 Internet users joined the event on Friday evening in Tokyo.   Tokyo-based blog marketing agency Agile Media Network (AMN)[J] held Japan’s first conference having a number of tech start-ups in comprehensive perspective, titled WISH2009 (Web Innovation SHare)[J].   More than a dozen of innovators had opportunities to present their works, and Japanese tech media journalists and GREE‘s CEO Yoshikazu Tanaka(@tanakayoshikazu) were invited to serve as award judges.

Here are wrap-ups of the event and award winning results.   Each presentation is almost five-minute long and given in Japanese language.

User Local[J] (led by Masao Ito[J], he founded Japan’s most popular bulletin board site for job hunting students[J], and handed it over to Japan’s e-commerce giant Rakuten. He got a degree from Waseda University Graduate School)   This tech start-up incubated from Waseda University developed several services focusing on web access statistics and analysis. Sony’s subsidiary in online banking service introduces a service titled “Lifetime Online Passbook”, which was launched in March 2008.   It aggregates billing details of credit card transactions etc., and shows you them on a web-based calender.  Probably it will make you easier to manage your personal expense and family budget.

The world-class motor company introduces an RSS-enabled car navigation system allowing driving users to collect information from third party’s websites such as expressway info portal ([J]), station-by-station basis gas price comparison site ([J]).

A Shibuya-based tech start-up and iPhone/iPod touch app developer has introduced its brand new line-up following Samurai Chess, Melody Bell and Tapnext.  The company unveiled a new service providing an iPhone app content distribution platform on ASP basis, acting for iPhone app content providers.   With the service, the content providers need not to set up a content server to start subscription-based content distribution service requiring in-app payment transactions.

Bounen Kaigi, annual year-end conference considering the record of the year, was held at Yahoo! Japan office again this year. This conference was sponsored by Yahoo! Japan and the event hosts were Gen Taguchi (blog: 100shiki[J]) and Daiya Hashimoto (blog: Jyoho Kogaku Passion for The Future[J]).

Guest’s topics

Guest was Keiya Mizuno. He is a writer of million-seller book “Yume wo kanaeru zou” ( means an elephant living out dreams). This book is so popular that it was made to TV drama and came to be the most  sold Japanese books in 2008, more than 1.7 million copies, Hashimoto said.



Yahoo! Japan’s 2008 trends by analyzing keywords

They explained about the trends on the internet in 2008, for example, comparision between mobile and pc user of mixi or analyzing the age brackets of  newly emerging community sites, pixiv, pu-pe girl and so on.

Zentai Kaigi(everyone’s discussion)

This may be most important session, the last was Zentai Kaigi. All participants were grouped up by 6 people and discussed.

Theme was “Thinking up the new big net service in 2009”. They must fill up the following paper.

Using (_______) problem from recession in 2009 as an underhanded way, you work out a new service (_______) for (______) people. This service has a great feature that (_______), so it has very high-level repeat rate. The name of this service is “(________)”.
In addition, the government admires this service and names the year from 2009 to 2015 after it, “(________) economy”.

The winner team’s idea is that NEET check the other house through some monitors in their houses. NEET are people who have no job including part-time and will increase in number because of the recession.


This conference will be also held in 2009. If you spend your year-end vacation in Japan, why don’t you join?

(*2) “Char Aznable” is a popular character in animation “Gunzam”. Its battery-charger is robot(mobile-suit)-head shape. This ridiculously expensive limited model was sold out in spite of its price, 130,000 yen (1200 USD).

Zentai Kaigi(everyone’s discussion)

The last, and probably the most important session is, as always, Zentai Kaigi. all attendee were teamed up by 6 people to make up a new net service idea to tuckle a challenge.

The challenge was to think about new innovative service by filling up lacked part to this sentence,

There are much more conferences and unconferences actively held in 2007 lead by networks on social network services, weblogs and movie-shared sites. Now, at the end of 2008, you are looking back that your accidentally invented meeting-support-service caused all the rage, made people have 20 times more conferences than before.

This revolutionary service, (________), solved the typical (________) problem on meeting by (______ing) with utilizing (________) on the net.

Discussion Time in Bounen Kaigi 2007

1st prize was given to the team “Cancel wo dogenkasento ikan”, which adds user-reputation review system on top of study meeting management system, to be able to exclude habitual “no-show” applicants.

“Dogenkasento ikan” is one of 2007’s buzzword, which is Miyazaki prefecture dialect means “must solve by any means”.

After-party was held at Izakaya (Japanese style bar) in Roppongi with around 7-80 attendee. Every year-end, this after-party has been deepening exchanges among entrepreneurs, engineers, marketers and other influencers.

Bounen Kaigi, which name is an original word made from “Bounenkai”(year-forgetting party in Japanese) and “Kaigi”(meeting, conference) started in December 2003, by Gen Taguchi, the owner of the most influent net business Japanese blog 100shiki, and Daiya Hashimoto, a famous book review blogger (Jyoho Kogaku Passion for The Future).
