Gazou-wo-purupuru-ni-suru-soft (A software to make image puddingy) is a tentative tool developed in C++ language by a Nico Nico Douga user YNW. You see how it works here, (you may turn off Japanese comments by the bottom-right button)

On the tool, you direct regions to move and give parameters how much it bound with area around, how it is bounced. Then dragging the image will make natural(?) movement physically calculated.

You Will Be Locked Out Of Twitter When You Mark Favorite Over 100,000 Tweets

Well, who the hell marks 100,000 favorite on Twitter anyway? Japanese!

There are several reports and complaints that heavy Twitter-favorite users were suddenly unable to log in, mark favorite, tweet, etc.

According to a popular and influencial Japanese web watcher @katoyuu, who also suffered this problem, listed up Japanese twitter users who had troubles referring @totte ‘s data. @katoyuu (168268, number of favorite he had marked), @yamifuu (unknown), @ta_boP (139352), @shy_azusa (131773), @barekichi (132049), @myu65 (127534), @fune (117835), @kegelstatt_log1 (115074) and @maybowjing (111264).

The symptoms fell on those users are:

  • Favorite button taking longer time
  • Favorite button does not work
  • Unable to post, see @replies
  • Unable to create/update/see lists
  • Unable to see own and others timeline
  • Unable to log in
  • API does not work

Many of those users became inaccessible to Twitter, and common attributes of them are number of favorites over 100,000 to 110,000.

After ignored by Twitter Japan support, @katoyuu contacted Twitter US support in English, but that resulted in “Thank you, we will investigate it” replies without further replies.

Many of them gave up their accounts and created another accounts. But after months @katoyuu noticed that his old account is accessible, … with all his 168,000 favorite disappeared.

This unexplained lock-out was named as “Fabo-Shi” (Death of Favorite) by Japanese Twitter users.

But why do you need 100,000 favorites? Well, different culture makes different use of web services.

Favotter, Japanese counterparts of Favstar, counting tweets gaining many favorites and show, is an important part of Japanese Twitter scene and often generates buzz. (Favotter has an English version, too)

There have been other similar popular services before Twitter’s favorite.

Webu Hakushu (Web Clap) [J] is a service to provide scripts other websites and blogs to make favorite-type “applaud” button, got popularity around year 2003. Sites visitors can push the button to express their appreciation. The first generation of social web service.

Hatena, geek’s favorite social services, also has Hatena Star, which let you mark “star” on blogs, blog comments, bookmarks, etc. Exporting Hatena Star to third party websites seem not successful, but this Hatena Star is extremely popular among Ugomemo Hatena (Flipnote Hatena in English) users assisted by Nintendo DS popularity.

Critics and discussions are generally not so welcomed by Japanese web users, when you compare with western websphere. You see it by Slashdot Japan stalled for long years and none of Digg clone really succeeded in Japan. But still people needs for some kind of approval on the web and this favorite-style attracts Japanese a lot because it only conveys positive information.

Digital Signage Consortium[J] has set up digital signage devices at Akihabara station and on the streets around there, and is helping Japanese Red Cross to campaign blood donation by using the augmented reality technology.

The device enables face recognition, and it can count how many people have seen the screen.   When you stop by in front of the device, it shows your appearance overlapped with the popular Vocaloid character Miku Hatsune‘s hair and the Red Cross nurse cap.

In Akihabara, there’s the best-known blood donation facility among geeks, which makes you feel as though you were in a starship.

China’s Best-known Mobile Portal Founder Launches New Search Start-up

Beijing-based serial entrepreneur Nick Yang (杨宁, see this ChineseSavvy.com article for more about him) got his third start-up Wukong Search (唔箜搜索) [C, mobile] go live in Mainland China.

In prior to the third start-up, he founded the popular web portal ChinaRen[C] for the younger generation in China, and succeeded to sell it to one of China’s best known portal Sohu (搜狐) in 2000.   After that, he launched a mobile content provider KongZhong (空中网) [C] and got it listed at NASDAQ in 2007.

Wukong’s idea was born in the process of developing ChinaRen, but we gave up to launch it and kept concentrating on adding new features to Chinaren including online alumni address book which makes the users easier to communicate with their ex-classmates.    Baidu[C] was still at early stage at that time, and no one knew what Baidu was.   I’ve never mentioned Wukong, this is the first time to talk about it.

Social network services and the Internet search will be two important keys for users to get information they want.   The mobile search service is entering the era of the personalization.  For the time being, Wukong focuses on providing young people with the mobile search, and will launch its PC edition next July.

In the interview with Mr. Yang, he unveiled the company was scheduled to fundraise a lot in the end of this year, but he pushed it back to the beginning of next year to get in time with the service launch.

In competing with other Chinese search services such as Google China[C] and Baidu, he believes Wukong Search will make good results since the mobile search market is still immature in the country.

J-Magic CEO Now Joins Mixi

Today, J-Magic[J] CEO Takuya Miyata[J] (@takmiyata[J]) unveiled that he had joined Japan’s largest social network service company Mixi[J] as an employee working with the Mixi business department.

As reported here on Asiajin, J-Magic handed over their breed-winning business of the face recognition mobile app to Mobile Factory last month, and they have been said to shut down all business very soon.   CNET Japan asked them how they would be running themselves[J], but no comment was given on that.

Here’s an English translation of what he has posted on his blog:

Besides having announced in our press release that we handed over our mobile app business to our partners, we decided to cut down or close the other all business.   We all thank our shareholders, our partners, our clients and all whom may be involved for their support.

And please excuse me my impoliteness that I tell you suddenly that, I joined Mixi.   Needless to say, Mixi is no longer just a social network service operator, but now leading this country’s entire Internet economy.   By making the most of my experience that I’ve been working in Japan and abroad, I will do my best for the company’s further success.   I appreciate your support.
