{"id":4087,"date":"2009-06-23T22:22:37","date_gmt":"2009-06-23T13:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/?p=4087"},"modified":"2009-06-23T22:22:37","modified_gmt":"2009-06-23T13:22:37","slug":"japanese-government-google-street-view-isnt-soo-bad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2009\/06\/japanese-government-google-street-view-isnt-soo-bad\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese government: Google Street View isn&#8217;t soo bad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/googlejapan_logo.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3541\" title=\"Google Japan's Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/googlejapan_logo.gif\" alt=\"Google Japan's Logo\" width=\"276\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nGoogle took multiple beatings from various Japanese sides (press, politics, activists etc.) ever since deciding to launch Street View in this country. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.jp\/\">Google Japan<\/a> countered concerns if their service is consistent with existing Japanese law by taking some Japan-specific actions, <a href=\"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2009\/05\/14\/google-streetview-considers-local-charcteristics-and-deploys-new-measures\/\">such as using special cameras<\/a>.<br \/>\nSo far the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soumu.go.jp\/english\/index.html\">Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications<\/a>, the most powerful interest group in the conflict, was quite silent about this question.<br \/>\nBut today ministry representatives said Street View doesn&#8217;t break the national personal information protection law because of the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>faces of individuals are usually blurred out<\/li>\n<li>being able to see license plates on vehicles doesn&#8217;t enable Street View users to identify the owners<\/li>\n<li>being able to see a house or apartment from the outside doesn&#8217;t mean Street View users can gain information about the people living there<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ministry also said this statement is just a first reaction, which will be followed by a more detailed report in August this year.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/streetview_screenshot.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-572\" title=\"streetview_screenshot\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/streetview_screenshot.png\" alt=\"streetview_screenshot\" width=\"400\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn Japan, Google Street View was <a href=\"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/06\/googlemap_streetview_in_japan\/\">launched in August 2008<\/a> and made available to ten prefectures in February 2009 (initial release: May 2007).<span style=\"display: none;\"> (<span class=\"bday dtstart updated\">2007-05-25<\/span>)initial<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google took multiple beatings from various Japanese sides (press, politics, activists etc.) ever since deciding to launch Street View in this country.
