{"id":2951,"date":"2009-04-08T13:43:19","date_gmt":"2009-04-08T04:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/?p=2951"},"modified":"2009-04-08T13:43:19","modified_gmt":"2009-04-08T04:43:19","slug":"two-broadband-video-streaming-sites-to-be-merged-to-survive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/two-broadband-video-streaming-sites-to-be-merged-to-survive\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Broadband Video Streaming Sites To Be Merged To Survive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Yahoo Japans Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/yahoo_logo.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"41\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2954\" title=\"USEN's Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/usen.gif\" alt=\"USEN's Logo\" width=\"109\" height=\"40\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2955\" title=\"Gyao's Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/gyao.gif\" alt=\"Gyao's Logo\" width=\"106\" height=\"53\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Rakutens Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/rakuten.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"47\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2953\" title=\"ShowTime's Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/showtime.gif\" alt=\"ShowTime's Logo\" width=\"163\" height=\"37\" \/><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yahoo.co.jp\/\">Yahoo Japan[J]<\/a> announced Tuesday it would buy 51% stake in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gyao.jp\/\">Gyao[J]<\/a> which is the free broadband video streaming service and has been wholly owned by Japan&#8217;s largest cable music broadcaster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usen.com\/ir\/english\/\">USEN<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Yahoo Japan will buy Gyao&#8217;s 4,998 shares for USD5.3M, and merge Gyao and <a href=\"http:\/\/streaming.yahoo.co.jp\/\">Yahoo Douga<\/a> (Yahoo Japan&#8217;s free video streaming service) together this coming fall.<br \/>\nAccording to the briefing made by the two heads of Yahoo Japan and USEN, both video services stuck on the problem of requiring complicated tasks and high costs to clear copyright issues before having the contents published on their sites, in contrast to the high rise of CGM (consumer generated media) or UGC (user generated contents) based video sharing sites like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\">YouTube<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/streaming.yahoo.co.jp\/\">Nico Nico Douga[J]<\/a> where the engaged users may upload videos without copyright consciousness.\u00a0\u00a0 By merging their background systems as well as the service brand, their new system is expected to require lower operation cost than ever.<br \/>\nYahoo Japan also announced Monday to have\u00a0set up\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/techon.nikkeibp.co.jp\/english\/NEWS_EN\/20090407\/168411\/\">its\u00a0new portal entrance especially designed for the TV sets having the Internet connectivity<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 The company&#8217;s CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.softbank.co.jp\/en\/info\/profile\/officer\/member_04\/index.html\">Masahiro Inoue<\/a> expected the video service to gain revenue in the synergy with such new service lineups.<br \/>\nOn the other hand, the broadband video service <a href=\"http:\/\/www.showtime.jp\">ShowTime[J]<\/a>, providing PPV and paid subscription based viewing, was a 50-50 joint venture co-found by USEN and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rakuten.co.jp\/info\/ir\/english\/\">Rakuten<\/a> in 2001.\u00a0\u00a0 At the end of\u00a0last February, USEN sold their shares of ShowTime to the other partner for USD17.8M, now it&#8217;s fully owned by Rakuten.\u00a0\u00a0 ShowTime has 60,000 titles and 1.1M users as of this writing.<br \/>\nSince USEN declared the deficit of USD538M in the business year ending last August, and it\u00a0has been\u00a0expected to announce more restructuring plans to improve the business.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Yahoo Japan[J] announced Tuesday it would buy 51% stake in Gyao[J] which is the free broadband video streaming service and has been wholly owned by Japan&#8217;s largest cable music broadcaster USEN.\u00a0\u00a0 Yahoo Japan will buy Gyao&#8217;s 4,998 shares for USD5.3M, and merge Gyao and Yahoo Douga (Yahoo Japan&#8217;s free video streaming service) together this&hellip;
