{"id":18065,"date":"2012-09-11T18:46:04","date_gmt":"2012-09-11T09:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/?p=18065"},"modified":"2012-09-11T18:46:04","modified_gmt":"2012-09-11T09:46:04","slug":"yahoo-japan-community-factory-acquisition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/yahoo-japan-community-factory-acquisition\/","title":{"rendered":"For $12.8 Million: Yahoo Japan Acquires Decopic Creator Community Factory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/08\/yahoo-japan-cookpad\/yahoo-japan-logo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17625\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17625\" title=\"yahoo japan logo\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/yahoo-japan-logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/11\/yahoo-japan-community-factory-acquisition\/communityfactory_logo-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18066\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18066\" title=\"communityfactory_logo\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/communityfactory_logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"78\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAcquisitions are relatively rare in Japan&#8217;s tech startup scene, but today <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yahoo.co.jp\/\">Yahoo Japan<\/a> caused a splash when the country&#8217;s biggest web company <a href=\"http:\/\/pr.yahoo.co.jp\/release\/2012\/0911a.html\">announced<\/a> it acquired Tokyo-based <a href=\"http:\/\/communityfactory.com\/\">Community Factory<\/a> (which launched in 2006).<br \/>\nTechCrunch Japan is <a href=\"http:\/\/jp.techcrunch.com\/archives\/jp20120911yahoo-communityfactory-acquisition\/\">reporting<\/a> that the price stands at around 1 billion yen, which currently translates to US$12.8 million.<br \/>\nCommunity Factory runs a number of social services and apps, but in its press release, Yahoo Japan singles out <a href=\"http:\/\/welovepic.com\/decopic\/index_en.html\">Decopic<\/a>, a multi-lingual photo sharing application that currently boasts 7 million downloads on Android and iOS (<a href=\"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/07\/decopic-kawaii-photo-sharing-app-gets-500000-users-in-2-weeks\/\">profile<\/a> on Asiajin from last year).<br \/>\nAccording to TechCrunch Japan, the so-called Mixi Fund, set up by Japan&#8217;s largest real-identity social network Mixi <a href=\"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/24\/mixi-appli-conference-2009\/\">back in 2009<\/a>, is the biggest shareholder in Community Factory (40%).<br \/>\nYahoo Japan&#8217;s move isn&#8217;t surprising: the company&#8217;s new CEO Manabu Miyasaka said in April (when he took over from Masahiro Inoue) that he plans to strengthen Yahoo Japan&#8217;s position in the mobile and social fields.<br \/>\nJust a few days ago, Yahoo Japan also <a href=\"http:\/\/venturenews-hnishikawa.blogspot.jp\/2012\/09\/yahoo-japan-establishes-venture-fund.html\">announced<\/a> it has set up the YJ Capital fund (capitalized at 1 billion yen) to invest in promising startups.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Acquisitions are relatively rare in Japan&#8217;s tech startup scene, but today Yahoo Japan caused a splash when the country&#8217;s biggest web company announced it acquired Tokyo-based Community Factory (which launched in 2006).
