The engine is available in beta, it&#8217;s open source (dual license MIT or GPL on github), and entirely free to use.<br \/>\nUEI says their aim with the release of the engine is to motivate young people in particular to start programming games as well as to lower the hurdle for entry into their <a href=\"http:\/\/9leap.net\/\">9leap<\/a> game creation contest (more info on that <a href=\"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/05\/9leap-d2c-and-uei-launch-program-for-young-smartphone-game-creators\/\">here<\/a>).<br \/>\nThe company not only provides the code, but also a range of graphics from previous game titles for free (a map editor and other elements are in the works).<br \/>\nThe features of enchant.js include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2D sprite library<\/li>\n<li>multi-layer background scrolling<\/li>\n<li>collision detection<\/li>\n<li>ActionScript-like event model<\/li>\n<li>etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>enchant.js is the brainchild of Ryo Tanaka (who is just 19 years old).<br \/>\nThe game engine supports Android 2.1 and up, plus iOS 3.0 and up.<br \/>\nHere are two screenshots from games that have been created with enchant.js:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/A_2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13943\" title=\"A_2\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/A_2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"596\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/B_3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13944\" title=\"B_3\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/B_3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"593\" height=\"414\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tokyo-based Ubiquitous Entertainment (UEI) announced [JP] &#8220;enchant.js&#8221; yesterday, an HTML5\/JavaScript game engine for smartphones (and PCs).
