{"id":12957,"date":"2011-02-22T10:49:04","date_gmt":"2011-02-22T01:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/?p=12957"},"modified":"2011-02-22T10:49:04","modified_gmt":"2011-02-22T01:49:04","slug":"japans-book-publishers-decide-to-go-with-epub-standard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/japans-book-publishers-decide-to-go-with-epub-standard\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan&#8217;s Book Publishers Decide To Go With EPUB Standard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/epub_logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12958\" title=\"Druck\" src=\"http:\/\/img.asiajin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/epub_logo-292x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"145\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nJapan&#8217;s book market is said to be worth around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2011-02-03\/ipad-makes-space-in-japan-s-tiny-homes-by-removing-bookshelves.html\">$24 billion<\/a> (it&#8217;s the world&#8217;s biggest and about 4x the size of the local video game industry), which means it&#8217;s not a big surprise that e-publishing is currently one of the &#8220;hot&#8221; trends in the country&#8217;s tech sector.<br \/>\nAnd yesterday, Japan&#8217;s biggest business daily The Nikkei reported that the local industry made quite an important decision: book publishers and electronics companies have agreed to adopt <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EPUB\">EPUB 3.0<\/a>, an open e-book standard that&#8217;s currently common in the US, Europe and other places.<br \/>\nThe Electronic Book Publishers Association of Japan was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/digital\/content-and-e-books\/article\/43075-japanese-publishers-form-e-book-association.html\">launched<\/a> in summer 2010 and counts the country&#8217;s biggest publishers among its 43 members.<br \/>\nEPUB is supported by the <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Kindle<\/span> and the iPad, among others.
