That&#8217;s a question Japan&#8217;s (and one of the world&#8217;s) biggest advertising agency <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dentsu.com\">Dentsu<\/a> recently asked in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dentsu.com\/news\/2010\/pdf\/2010115-1125.pdf\">survey<\/a> [PDF] it has been conducting since 1985 (n=1,000). For the first time, Dentsu has also compiled a &#8220;hit list&#8221; that&#8217;s supposed to shine a light on what&#8217;s going to be &#8220;hot&#8221; in Japan <em>next<\/em> year.<br \/>\nThe subjects of the survey could name anything they wanted to: persons, products, services, TV shows, food etc. What&#8217;s interesting is that there is a high number of tech-related items in both lists, which are shown below:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2010 Hit Products (emphasis on tech-related items supplied)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>No. 1: Smartphones<br \/>\nNo. 2: <a href=\"http:\/\/asiajin.com\/blog\/tag\/twitter\">Twitter <\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 3: Munchable chili oil (a hot topping)<br \/>\n<strong>No. 4: Digital broadcasting-equipped flat-panel TVs <\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 5: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sakamoto_Ry%C5%8Dma\">Ryoma Sakamoto<\/a> (popular historical figure; a TV series about him was aired earlier this year)<br \/>\nNo. 6: International flight services at Haneda Airport (Japan&#8217;s No. 2 airport boosted its number international flights this year)<br \/>\nNo. 7: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tokyo_sky_tree\">Tokyo Sky Tree<\/a> (broadcasting tower to be completed in 2012)<br \/>\n<strong>No. 8: Energy-saving home appliances (the government supports individuals buying eco-friendly electronics)<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 9: 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa<br \/>\n<strong>No. 10: LED light bulbs<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 11: &#8220;B-grade&#8221; local gourmet food (relatively inexpensive food)<br \/>\nNo. 12: Akira Ikegami (journalist)<br \/>\nNo. 13: Domestic &#8220;fast fashion&#8221; brands<br \/>\nNo. 14: GeGeGe\u2019s Wife (hit TV drama)<br \/>\n<strong>No. 15: 3D movies, TV, cameras and other 3D products<br \/>\nNo. 16: Hybrid vehicles<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 17: Imported &#8220;fast fashion&#8221; brands<br \/>\nNo. 18: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AKB48\">AKB48<\/a> (48-member all-girl idol group)<br \/>\n<strong>No. 19: Tablets<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 20: Yoichi Watanabe (war photographer and TV personality)<br \/>\nIn the 2010 list, eight of the top 20 products are tech-related, but the number is much higher in the list of the upcoming hit products and services, which just sees six items that are <em>not<\/em> related to technology in one form or the other:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2011+ Hit Products (emphasis on tech-related items supplied)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>No. 1: Tokyo Sky Tree<br \/>\n<strong>No. 2: LED light bulbs<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>No. 3: Electric vehicles<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 4: International flight services at Haneda Airport<br \/>\n<strong>No. 5: Smartphones<br \/>\nNo. 6: 3D movies, TV, cameras and other 3D products<br \/>\nNo. 7: Hybrid cars<br \/>\nNo. 7: E-book readers<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 9: Discount airline tickets<br \/>\n<strong>No. 10: Tablets<br \/>\nNo. 11: Home solar power systems<br \/>\nNo. 12: Digital broadcasting-equipped widescreen flat-panel TVs<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>No. 13: Compact data communication devices<br \/>\nNo. 14: Home fuel cell systems<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>No. 15: Group purchase coupons<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 16: Bread and sweets made with rice powder<br \/>\n<strong>No. 17: Blade-less electric fans<br \/>\nNo. 18: Cloud computing (including related books)<\/strong><br \/>\nNo. 18: B-grade local gourmet food<br \/>\nNo. 20: Alcohol-free beer-like beverages<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are Japan&#8217;s top products in 2010?
